古箏初級指法 Guzheng for Beginners
(1) Thumb practice

(L) - Thumb practice or “tuo” – the thumb plucks a string forward and inward towards your palm. There are two methods:
(一) 提彈 the finger(s) leaves the string after plucking - Relax your palm to make sure it is flat. Let your fingers lower naturally. Slightly open your thumb. Make sure that the pick does not touch the string too deep or too shallow. Feel the strength on your fingertip. To relax your hand, you may first hold a fist and then release to a half open shape. Make sure that the second joint [Interphalangeal (IP) Joint] of your thumb does not bend inward. Both joints have to slightly bend outward. The hand should resume to its original shape after plucking.
(二) 夾彈 the finger(s) touches the next string after plucking – You can place your little finger or ring finger on a string as a support; the distance should be within an octave. Use the second joint [Metacarpophalangeal (MP) Joint] of your thumb to pluck. When preparing to pluck, place your pick on the string, pluck forward and downward (45 degree angle) to touch the next string. For example, if you intend to pluck 3 (mi), your thumb should touch 2(re) after plucking.
Try not to play too fast at the beginning. Relax your finger and palm after playing a note each time. You may increase your speed as you become more familiar with the technique.

Note: When your left hand is not plucking, you should still move it to the same string as the right thumb. Maintain a palm’s length from the bridge. Place your left hand gently on the string.
